School Success for Kids with High-Functioning Autism

Hello All!  I'm currently catching up on some research, strategies, interventions, and insights on people diagnosed with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder.  My highlighting and notes are getting a bit out of control...

Some highlights from the 5th chapter: "Best Practices in School" include...

  • Give students with HFASD specific roles that highlight their strengths in cooperative groups. For example, deem a student the "Technology Expert" for reading centers.  He/she is the go-to person for helping with iPad issues. :)
  • Perform a task analysis of classroom demands before school begins and throughout the first weeks.  Look at the schedule and spend a day in your student's shoes!  Then use your info to determine goals, interventions, etc.
  • Classrooms with differentiation built in for all students = best learning environments with students with ASD or HFASD!  If all students are receiving unique learning experiences, kiddos with special needs will fit in more naturally (Collaborate with your gen. ed. teachers!)
I could go on... but that's all for now!  Next, I'll share some major insights I'll use from the "Strategies and Interventions" chapter.  Let me know if you're reading this too, I'd love to chat and share ideas!

Lots of Love,
